The CBR Brave defeated the Sydney Bears in a 13-3 blowout at the Phillip Swimming and Skating Centre. The Brave retain their top-of-the-ladder position, with the Melbourne Ice hot on their heels, while the Bears are under pressure to keep their Finals hopes alive.

CBR Brave Head Coach, Rob Starke was pleased with his team’s win.
“I think it was a great result, we played very hard right from the start,” said Starke.
“We didn’t let up all the way through, so (it’s) a really good comprehensive win for us. I think we played a complete game, we haven’t had a real complete game this year, and that’s the result.”
The Bears drew first blood with Tomas Landa on a 5-3 power play. Landa beat Brave’s Aleksi Toivonen on the second shot the young goalie faced. The CBR Brave were quick to respond however, with Tyler Kubara cleaning up his own rebound to deke past James Downie and score his first-of-three goals for the night, levelling the teams at 1-1.
The CBR Brave onslaught grew from there: goals to Brian Bales, Tyler Kubara and Dominic Jalbert extended their lead to 4-1 by the end of the first period.
The second period started with a bang with Geordie Wudrick scoring just 15 seconds after the puck was dropped to take the Brave 5-1. Wudrick had a stellar night, putting away four goals for seven points. The Sydney Bears fought admirably, and were rewarded with Vlad Rubes beating Toivonen for the second time in seven shots on goal.

The Brave maintained the lion’s share of possession throughout the period, and goals to Jan Safar, Chris McPhail, Geordie Wudrick and Luke Philps saw the lead stretch to an almost insurmountable 9-2 before the Bears struck back through Rivait to make the difference 9-3 heading into the final stanza.
A scrum ensued at the end of the second which resulted in Bayley Kubara, Toby Kubara, Tyler Kubara, Tyrell Clare, Richard Tesarik and Jackson Brewer each sit double minors for roughing, and Bears’ Tyler Noseworthy serving 2 minutes for roughing.
Starting the third period on a power play, the Brave’s Wudrick converted 50 seconds to notch their score to 10-3.
The Bears rallied in the third to withstand the continued pressure from the Brave before Tyler Kubara completed his hat trick with less than nine minutes remaining. Final goals from Casey Kubara and Geordie Wudrick capped off a dominant performance from the CBR Brave at home.

Taking the ice without their number one goalie Anthony Kimlin, Sydney Bears Head Coach Ron Kuprowsky spoke of his team’s spirit, while lamenting some missed opportunities.
“I gotta give the boys credit, we gave it pretty good in the third period again. We tried to come back, tried a few things, we just kept playing right to the buzzer” Kuprowsky said.
“At the end, we had pressure on them but we weren’t burying our chances, that’s the story of the night.”
The Sydney Bears will look forward to taking home ice at the Macquarie Ice Rink against the Newcastle Northstars on Sunday 18th June. The Brave now rest until Saturday 24th June, when they will welcome back the Sydney Bears to the Phillip Swimming and Ice Skating Centre.
