Perth Thunder locked in their ticket to the 2017 AIHL Finals presented by Air Canada with a crucial 4-2 win over the Adelaide Avalanche on Sunday.
Continuing their Heritage Round in Adelaide Avalanche kit, the game got off to a slower start than Saturday, with much of the first period going by scoreless despite opportunities for Adelaide’s Joe Rezek and Cameron Critchlow.

Impeccable goal tending by Thunder’s Peter Di Salvo kept the scoreboard bare until the last two minutes, when Lyndon Lodge scored for the visitors.
The second period saw Perth capitalising first with Rob Haselhurst putting his team 2-0 up. But it took less than a minute for Adelaide’s first line to respond: with Critchlow and Rezek recording assists for Ales Kratoskas’ goal, closing the gap 2-1 into the second intermission.
The final frame sealed the fate of both teams: Christian Oullet and Benjamin Breault both scored to Perth up by three goals with just over three minutes remaining. After a high sticking call on Alastair Punler and delay of game penalty for Haselhurst provided a late five on three power play opportunity for Adelaide, Critchlow was able to pressure Di Salvo with an unassisted goal. But as the clock wound down, it was too little, too late for the home team. The Thunder recorded the three point win and clinched a Finals berth as a top four team, currently second on the AIHL ladder.

From here, both teams will have a weekend’s respite. On the 19th of August, the Thunder will head to Melbourne for a double header against the Mustangs – who are currently sitting in fourth position with their eye on third – while the Adrenaline will host the Sydney Bears who will be coming off a two-week spell.
The Adelaide Heritage Round jerseys proved a big hit with fans - auctioned off sucessfully to raise funds for Camp Quality. Photo: Frank Kutsche.
While Sunday’s game sheet didn’t read the way Adelaide wanted, their Heritage round successfully raised funds for Camp Quality. Home-town and League favourite, Joe Rezek donned two jerseys over the weekend – an eponymous “Rezek” and an “Aussie Joe” numbered jersey – went to a lucky bidder for $600.
