The Newcastle Northstars have registered their first win of season 2017, defeating the Sydney Bears 5-2 in front of a sell-out crowd at Hunter Ice Skating Stadium on Saturday night.
Zane Jones, Joey Harcharik and Matt Marantz scored for Newcastle as a dominant second period secured the win, while Bears veteran Vlad Rubes scored his 400th AIHL point with a goal in the second period, which Bears Head Coach Ron Kuprowsky said he deserved.

“If anyone deserves something like that, Vlad is the guy,” Kuprowsky said. “(He’s a) 100% team player and comes out and does it for the boys, so my congratulations go to Vlad.”
Leading the play in the first period, the Northstars pushed hard on the Bears and dominated possession. Moving the puck around with speed and accuracy, they created numerous opportunities but remained scoreless at the end of the first period.
The second period contrasted the first with three goals, including one power play goal, from newcomers Jones, Harcharik and Marantz.
Fighting back in the third period, the Bears landed a top shelf goal flying straight over Northstars goaltender Nick Mizen’s glove, giving them a lift., but two goals late in the third period kept the Northstars ahead, including the final goal scored on an empty net.
Bears Head Coach Ron Kuprowsky wasn’t disappointed with his team.
“I thought it was a closely matched game, there wasn’t much difference between the two teams,” Kuprowsky said. “A couple of cross bars on our part and a couple of really huge saves on their goalies part and (we’d have) different results.”

Petrie shared his impression of Nick Mizen’s game between the pipes.
“It’s about what we expected, A lot of quality shots and lots of traffic in front of him too, especially with the pressure coming at him in third period,” Petrie said. “We are very happy with his performance.”
The Northstars prepare to take on CBR Brave at home tomorrow night, while the Bears travel home to take on the Perth Thunder.
