The Sydney Ice Dogs have defeated the Newcastle Northstars 7-2 as Friday night hockey returned to the Macquarie Ice Rink in 2017. Ice Dogs’ forward Grant Toulmin was the star of the game, scoring four goals to record his first multi-goal game of the season. It’s the second time the determined Ice Dogs have beaten the defending Goodall Cup champions, having outscored the Northstars 14-7 this year.

“It was one of those games where everything worked” said Toulmin.
“Everything just clicked and the most important thing was we got the win.”
The Ice Dogs jumped out to an early two-goal lead in the first period, thanks to goals by Shannon McGregor and Todd Stephenson. The Northstars managed to claw one back before the end of the first period as Joey Harcharik scored for the visitors.
The Ice Dogs pushed hard in the second period and they were rewarded for their efforts. Toulmin scored his first two goals of the night and youngster Ellesse Carini scored his third goal of the season. Northstars’ defenseman Felix Poulin scored his 10th goal of the season and the teams headed into the second intermission with the Ice Dogs leading 5-2.
The third period however, was all Ice Dogs. In a bid to change momentum the Northstars replaced goalie Charlie Smart (18 shots, 15 saves) with Nic Mizin (17 shots, 13 saves). While at the other end, Ice Dogs goalie Damien Ketlo was solid in the net, stopping 32 of 34 shots on the night.
Toulmin scored twice in the final period to give the home side a morale-boosting 7-2 win in front of a big Sydney home crowd.

The Ice Dogs played a disciplined style of the hockey: only conceding three minor penalties all night. Toulmin credited his team’s ability to bring physicality to the game while staying out of the penalty box as one of the key factors for the Dogs momentum.
“That’s not the typically Ice Dogs style,” laughed Toulmin.
“We tend to drop a toe over the line some nights, but it was a big game for us tonight. Just looking at the standings we knew how important tonight was, we kept it together and got a big win tonight.”
The Ice Dogs shift their focus to next weekend as they prepare to hit the road for a double header in Perth against the Thunder. The Northstars will seek to regroup quickly as they’re back in action on Sunday night when they face the Sydney Bears at the Macquarie Ice Rink.
