Mustangs and ATC Productions live stream odyssey |

The MOAT: Melbourne Mustangs’ off-ice preparations continued right up until game day as they announced on Friday that they will partner with ATC Productions to live stream all home games. On top of some big signings for the 2014 season, the Mustangs have continued to build a local and international fan base. The capability to stream their games will help solidify this support, allowing fans across the world to watch Mustangs games live. The Mustangs join the Melbourne Ice, CBR Brave, Sydney Ice Dogs and Newcastle North Stars in providing a live stream this year, meaning a lot more hockey for fans to watch. MOAT: Melbourne Mustangs President, John Belic announced the new partnership at the club’s jersey presentation on Friday night. “To add to the excitement this year we will be live streaming our home games. This will give all our overseas and interstate fans the opportunity to watch our games,” Belic said. “It will also enable us to build an additional audience, a viewing audience. We plan to build a significant community and viewer base to be able to offer additional value to our current sponsors and provide marketing opportunities to a new batch of potential partners.” Manager of ATC Productions, James Morgan, had similar goals as the production company further develops its relationship with the AIHL, promoting the sport to new and existing fans. “Through the ability to follow the team when real-life gets in the way, we create the opportunity for clubs to generate emotional investment in their fans through continuity and, therefore, create rusted-on, die-hard supporters,” Morgan said. “The ease of access to a live stream then allows these fans to become ambassadors of the game, giving people new to the sport the opportunity to see what it’s all about and commit to coming to their first game.” Tough decisions have had to be made, however, before the club decided to live stream its games. Mustangs Digital & Media Manager, Myles Harris, said that the main stumbling block to providing a live stream was consciously cutting down on gate earnings. “It came to the point that we were all convinced that we need to display our product to as many people as possible to grow, and that gate reduction is not a factor vs new fans acquired,” he said. It’s also tough for ATC Productions who require 12-16 crewmembers just to bring the live stream to fans’ screens. “Preparation for an upcoming season usually begins eight weeks from the date of the first game,” Morgan explained. “In this time there’s equipment designs to be completed, maintenance to be carried out, code to be written, graphics to be generated, and then finally the equipment transported to the site and installed.” “The physical installation at the Medibank Icehouse takes place over the course of four days. The night before the opening game our crew were on-site until 3am, and were back at work at 10am.” It’s an exciting time for the Mustangs. Partnering with ATC Productions will allow them to expand their audio-visual content delivery and potentially use the technology to develop beyond merely streaming games and will help engage fans both in Australia and overseas. “Video will be a large part of our media over the next few years. We see streaming as being part of an overall package for fans and sponsors,” Harris explained. “As you can see with the coverage the CBR Brave got, Aussie hockey and great content does well in overseas hockey circles. There are some big eyes on the Mustangs cog, which will turn other cogs that will hopefully bridge the gap between hockey/NHL fans and the AIHL.” Another important consideration is the families of the imports. Pat O’Kane’s family reportedly gets up at 2-4am to watch the tweet stream. “The internet serves as a very personal connection to the families of our players,” Harris said. “Keeping the families close to the action and connected with the club, is something we take very seriously.” The scope for growth isn’t lost on Harris. He says the Melbourne Mustangs game day product is a product that they are constantly trying to add value to and the accessibility created by the stream will have greater flow on effects to the club. With all four games of the opening round of the 2014 AIHL streamed on the weekend, a monumental shift has occurred. Fans across the country, and the world, are now able to connect with clubs and watch more games in real time than ever before. Fans tuned in from as far away as Scotland and Canada on Sunday to see the Mustangs beat the Sydney Ice Dogs 6-3. All home games will be streamed live here [Hyperlink].
