It was a relatively quiet weekend on the AIHL front with just four games taking place in Sydney, Newcastle and Canberra. However, big score lines were the trend of the weekend with five of the eight teams scoring six or more goals in a match, the Melbourne Ice managing to do so twice and the Bears being the only team to do so and lose. ----- North Stars 7 def. Ice 4 The North Stars have surely rekindled their home form with their first consecutive home victories of the season The North Stars have scored three times as many goals in their last two home games then the rest of their home games this season combined The Ice concede their most goals in consecutive matches (15) since at least 2008 This was the fifth consecutive game that Melbourne Ice have lost to the North Stars; not since their Goodall Cup Final win in 2012 have they defeated the Newcastle team Austin McKenzie scored two goals in the final period to bring his season tally to nine, his most goals ever in a single AIHL season and equal second for an Australian-based player (Ice Dogs’ Robert Malloy (permanent resident) is on 10; Mustangs’ Jamie Bourke and Ice Dogs’ David Dunwoodie are also on nine) ----- Brave 8 def. Bears 6 The Brave scored their highest ever total goals in a match, setting a lofty club record early in their history This was the seventh win in eight matches for the Brave This was the most goals scored by the Bears in over a year (May 26th, 2013) and their equal most goals scored in a loss since an 8-7 shootout defeat in the Sydney derby on August 16th, 2008 With 14 goals scored, this was the equal highest scoring match of the season Stephen Blunden scored a puck-shattering eight points (two goals, six assists) to rocket to the top of the point scoring table for AIHL 2014 After the injection of back-up goalie Luke Read early in the second period the Bears would go on to outscore the Brave 6-3 ----- Ice 6 def. Bears 4 This was the first regular time win on the road for the Ice is four matches The Ice are now 6-2-1-0 on the road this season, the best record of any team The Bears are now winless in their last six games at Sydney Ice Arena The Bears have scored ten goals in their last two matches, the same amount as they had scored in the six matches prior Sean Hamilton Steen scored points in a fourth consecutive match, his best streak in his AIHL career ----- Ice Dogs 6 def. Brave 3 This was the first defeat in four games for the Brave, and their biggest goal scoring haul ever in a losing effort The Brave lost on the road for the first time in their short history (three games) The Ice Dogs secured consecutive victories for just the second time this season The Ice Dogs have now scored 26 goals in their last four games at Liverpool Catholic Club Sports Complex Tim Noting has saved 58 of his last 61 shots against, including a shutout against Adelaide last weekend |
