Barg heroics end Thunders playoff chances |

The Sydney Ice Dogs started their trip to the Wild West in the best possible way, coming from behind to claim a 3-1 win over the Perth Thunder at Perth Ice Arena on Saturday night. Out to seek revenge after being defeated 8-2 at home the week before, it was a slow start from the visitors as the Thunder aimed to continue from where they left off, holding onto the slimmest of finals chances where only a regular time win would do. The home side got off to a good start, dominating puck possession. It took until three minutes from the close of the first for the Thunder to get on the board when Stuart Stefan slotted the goal off Robert Haselhurst. With 11 shots in the first, the Ice Dogs upped the tempo with the chance to make a fourth consecutive playoff series and defend the Goodall Cup a clear motivation for the Sydney-siders. However, despite finding ways through the Thunder’s defence, the Ice Dogs were unable to crack goalie Mathieu Dugas with the French Canadian being able to fend off their 15 attempts on goal and keep a clean sheet for the period. With the game in the balance at 1-0 and both sides with so much to play for, it was always going to go down to the wire. A power play goal was enough to spark the Ice Dogs when league scoring leader Simon Barg found the back of the net. Barg found the back of the net again less than a minute later to give the Ice Dogs the lead for the first time in the match. With the clock winding down, Barg pounced on another goal, completing his hat-trick and helping the Ice Dogs one step closer to the finals. Thunder’s captain Sam Wilson reflected on his team’s effort after the game. “The game started well with us scoring the first goal, we had all the momentum for the first two periods and in the third period we started to slow down,” said Wilson. “The Dogs scored their first and continued to build off that scoring another seconds later. Cutting down to two lines in the third ended up being costly as we seem to run out of legs and the Dogs took control of the game unfortunately.” The win has great implications for the finals with the Perth Thunder and Newcastle North Stars unable to make the playoffs following this game. The Sydney Ice Dogs however retain the two-point lead over the Adelaide Adrenaline after both teams won their games on Saturday. The Thunder hosted the Ice Dogs again on Sunday. In the final week of the regular season, the Perth Thunder travel to Melbourne to take on the Melbourne Ice in a double header at the Medibank Ice House, with the Ice still able to claim the minor premiership. The Ice Dogs will take on the other minor premiership hopefuls the Melbourne Mustangs in what could be a semi-final preview on Sunday at Liverpool. |
