Two goals and an assist to Wehebe Darge saw the Adelaide Adrenaline overcome the Sydney Ice Dogs 4-2 at the Adelaide Ice Arena on Sunday night.
After missing a majority of Saturday’s game after dropping the gloves with Shannon McGregor, Darge continued his great form this season.
Adrenaline head coach Ryan O'Handley was impressed with Darge’s performance and said he was solid once again.
“Wehebe’s just such a solid player. He’s so quick and him being out yesterday really hurt our rhythm a lot as a team,” O’Handley said. “You could see today we had a little extra step out there.”
Wehebe added that he felt fresher due to missing most of yesterday’s game.
“I think my legs were a little fresher – you know – I had one game on the weekend,” he said. “But I think I played pretty well, did the team thing and it was good.”
Ice Dogs head coach Anders Jespersen was disappointed that his side did not play as a team.
“We are missing some attitude from some of our players. Some of them think they can do everything on their own hand,” he said. “We have to work together as a team and we’re definitely not doing that at the moment.”
The Ice Dogs took the lead early against the flow of play with Ryan Strayer deking past two Adrenaline defencemen before slotting the puck home stickside.
Adelaide had the majority of the puck in the opening period and peppered the net, but Sydney import goalkeeper Matthew Grogan was solid until five minutes left in the period.
A slapshot from Sean Greer at the point rocketed past Grogan's left shoulder and into the back of the net, sending the home fans wild.
Greer said he just put his head down and took the shot.
“There was a guy coming towards me and Wehebe said ‘shoot, shoot’ so I just put my head down and shot,” Greer said. “The guy was coming and I didn’t even see it go in as the guy hit me.”
Both goalies made some impressive saves at the beginning of the second, with Grogan stopping Adrenaline forward Ryan Remillard on the breakaway with a stick check.
Darge helped Adelaide take the lead with a shorthanded goal, tapping the puck into the wide open net with an assist from Jonathan Boxill.
The lead was short lived as the Ice Dogs replied 30 seconds later through Alec Stephenson on the power play.
It looked like the teams would go into the dressing room locked at 2-all, until Darge added his second giving the Adrenaline a 3-2 lead at the final intermission.
Remillard added a fourth to seal the win for the home side as they swept the weekend and held second spot on the ladder.
O’Handley said he expects his team to win when they are playing at home.
“You absolutely have to win your games at home so I'm pleased with the two wins this weekend and that puts us in a good spot now,” he said. “On the road again [next week] so it’s going to be tough.”
Jespersen looked toward Canberra next week and said the Ice Dogs are doing their best with a really young team who haven’t played at this level for long.
“It’s tough. We’re 0-9,” he said. “We’re doing our best, and it’s a lot of young guys who haven’t played at this level before so it’s really difficult.”
The Ice Dogs look to snap their losing streak against the Brave next Saturday and Adelaide head west to take on the first-placed Thunder in Perth. |
