Bears impress with hard-earned win over North Stars |

With two goals and two assists, Sydney Bears captain Michael Schlamp led his team to a 6-2 victory over the Newcastle North Stars at Penrith Ice Palace Saturday night. The win takes the Bears’ winning streak to three, while the North Stars have dropped their last two games. Despite inflicting the Bears last defeat two weeks ago with an 8-3 win in Newcastle, North Stars coach Andrew Petrie described the Bears as a much better team then their early results would indicate. “I honestly thought the Bears played really well,” Petrie said. “I think they’re a much better team then their early results would indicate. They had a couple of fortunate goals early but I can’t fault the boys for effort. In terms of commitment I thought we were one hundred percent from start to finish. “It’s kind of ironic because I’ve been pushing them to give me one hundred percent effort from start of the game to the end and when they finally do... we lose. It’s a bit of irony.” Although the Bears took two early penalties, the Sydneysiders were attacking hard, coming up with two strong two-on-one shorthanded opportunities. Newcastle defencemen Jan Safar was able to come up strong and break up both opportunities with a quick stick and muscling the forwards off the puck. However, Sydney carried the momentum from the kill with their first goal scored by Schlamp on a quick wrister the next shift. Ales Padelek scored his second goal of the season with off some strong play behind the net. The Czech forward was stickhandling behind the net trying to make a pass to the slot when it deflected off a North Stars defenceman’s skate and behind goaltender Joshua Broekman for a two-goal lead to end the period. The North Stars started the second period strong, reducing the deficit only 32 seconds into the period. After forcing the Bears to ice the puck, a set play off the face-off saw the Novocastrians converge in on the Sydney goal with the quick hands of Geordie Wudrick flicking a pass back to the point for Luke Moffatt’s twelfth goal of the season. Minutes later, defencemen John Kennedy Jr. threw a stretch pass for a two-on-one breakaway for the Newcastle side. Bears defender Paul Bond laid down to block the shot with Wudrick stickhandling outside his reach to set-up Matt Wetini to even the score to at 2-2. “North Stars have a very good team with strong shots,” Bears goaltender Kamil Jarina said. “We have to be careful how we handle those and today we did. The guys played hard in our zone; they wanted to help me so I have to say thank you to them.” It took only 14 seconds for the Bears to regain the lead through the Bears’ Thomas Cooney scoring through Broekman’s five-hole to recapture the lead and take the one-goal advantage into the final break. The third period saw the teams exchanging chances before the home-side was able to break the drought. Joseph Harcharik beat the North Stars goalie on a breakaway blocker-side upstairs for his eighth of the season. “[The Bears] had most of their breakaway opportunities when we were trying to force a comeback so you have to take chances when you’re trying to get back into a game,” Petrie said. “You have to cheat a bit and your D have to pinch a bit earlier then they would otherwise. I thought we played the game as well as we could and we just didn’t get a win.” With three minutes remaining the Sydney captain, Schlamp forced a turnover in his own zone and turned on the turbo for an unassisted goal before Lee Turner, who had already assisted on two goals, was able to score in the final minute for a final score of 6-2 for the home-side. “I thought the boys played really well; we won every battle,” Turner said. “I think we out-skated them tonight which is what the coaches wanted us to do and I think it just really showed in the game.” Both teams host the Melbourne Mustangs this weekend with the North Stars facing off first at Hunter Ice Skating Stadium on Saturday followed by the Bears at Penrith Ice Palace on Sunday. |
