The CBR Brave completed a weekend sweep of the Adelaide Adrenaline with an 8-5 win at the Phillip Swimming & Ice Skating Centre on Sunday night. After a tight first two periods, the final period saw 10 goals scored between the teams. The first period saw plenty of action in the offensive zone for the Brave, but they were unable to capitalise on the sustained pressure. The Brave looked to have broken the deadlock mid-way through the period but the goal was waved off due to a player in the Adrenaline crease. The Brave had the majority of possession through the period but were unable to convert until late in the opening term. It was Neal Prokop who would give the home side the advantage after latching onto a massive rebound to score from close range. The first period ended with the Brave well and truly on top of the Adrenaline, but with just a one goal lead going in to the first intermission. The second period narrative followed much of the first, with neither team being able to get the better of the goalies Alex Tetreault and Russel Brewer. It took almost 12 minutes for the Brave to extend their lead through Stephen Blunden who caught the deflection of a blue line laser from Jimmy Byers. The resilient Adrenaline continued to work hard and opened the account with just 34 seconds remaining in the second period. The goal came after some stout defence led to a 3-on-2 rush for the visitors that proved too much to handle for the Brave, with Gabriel O’Connor beating Tetreault after some crisp passing between the three Adrenaline players on the break. The period closed with the Adrenaline trailing the Brave 2-1 and it looked as though we were in for a tight finish at the Brave Cave. It didn’t take the Brave long to assert their dominance again in the third period, with Mathieu Guertin beating Adelaide goalie Brewer just nine seconds after the start of the period. The Brave would again extend their lead, with a Jan Safar cannon from the blue line beating Brewer to give the home team a seemingly unassailable lead. But the Adrenaline refused to give in. The Adrenaline were given an energy boost after penalties to Casey Kubara and Neal Prokop saw the Adrenaline on a 5-on-3 power play. Despite the resilient defence of the Brave, the Adrenaline made the most of their two-man advantage with Gabriel O’Connor netting his second of the night to bring the Adrenaline to within two goals and with the momentum. The Adrenaline took less than a minute to further capitalise on the man advantage, with T.J. Battani deflecting a Cole MacMillan slap shot just in front of Brave goalie Alex Tetreault. With the Adrenaline trailing by just one goal, they were forced into a goalie change with Russel Brewer being unable to continue due to a lower body injury. The Brave would extend their lead with Blunden and Guertin on a two-man breakaway with Guertin slamming home from close range to beat replacement goalie Peter King and give the Brave a 5-3 lead. The Brave would further extend their lead through Neal Prokop beating King just 10 seconds later to make it 6-3 and looking too strong for the injury riddled Adrenaline defence. In a true credit to their determination, the Adrenaline once again threatened to rise against the flow of the game and with goals to Cole MacMillan and the completion of a Gabriel O’Connor hat trick, the visiting side were pounding on the door at 6-5 with just over a minute to go. Empty net goals to Mathieu Guertin, completing his hat trick, and Kai Miettinen at just one second remaining saw the home side run away with an 8-5 win over a resilient and battered Adrenaline. Adelaide Adrenaline Coach Graham Charbonneau was disappointed with the result, but found the silver lining in the result. “It was good to see them come on hard in the third period,” Charbonneau said. “It’s something that we’ve struggled with all year. So I guess that’s the positive out of the weekend is that we’ve finally put together a third period, unfortunately we couldn’t get it over the line though.” CBR Brave coach Josh Unice credited the toughness of the Adrenaline. “I think maybe we expected a little bit less, but that says a lot about Adelaide,” Unice said. “They kept going, kept trying, kept battling, they kept giving it their all and they hung around, and when you let teams hang around in this league, in any league, it’s very dangerous but at the same time we got six points” Next weekend, the Adelaide Adrenaline head home for a double header against the Melbourne Mustangs at the IceArena in Adelaide. While the CBR Brave travel north to face the Sydney Bears at the Penrith Ice Palace next Sunday. |
