Malloy leads North Stars to glory |

Newcastle North Stars Captain Robert Malloy has led his second AIHL team to a Goodall Cup, doing something no other player in AIHL history has done. The 29-year-old was the captain of the Sydney Ice Dogs back in 2013, leading that team to Goodall Cup success against his current team of Newcastle. “It's pretty cool,” he said. “I don't know if anyone's done that, to lead a second team to a cup, it's something I'll carry with me forever that's for sure.” After being part of the North Stars squad in 2015 as well, this is the third Goodall Cup for the popular defenceman. He said they are all special in their own individual ways. “I think with the Dogs, that season was a bit unique and we had a couple of guys that really carried our team, a guy like Simon Barg, who's one of the best players who ever played in the league,” Malloy said. “Then you come to a team like this, Newcastle, where there's a really strong legacy and kind of a built in tradition how you play. A little bit of a difference but you have to have some grit to get there in the end that's for sure.” Malloy also reminisced on the 2016 season and what it was like being the defending champions. “Well we faced a lot of adversary this year, especially from the beginning,” he said. “It's difficult to win Cups back-to-back because you have a target on your back, so everybody's out to get you. However with this playing format, anything can happen. “You saw 4th place vs. 3rd place and any bounce could've changed history, like a butterfly effect. You just hope for a bit of puck luck, work hard and good things will come.” |
