The Perth Thunder continue their impressive start to the season, defeating the Sydney Ice Dogs 4-1 on Saturday night at the Macquarie Ice Rink. On the back of a stellar performance from goalie Peter Di Salvo, the Thunder scored three unanswered goals in the second period to remain undefeated in 2017.

Di Salvo came into the game with a perfect AIHL record: 7 wins from 7 games and the import net minder was the difference between the two teams, stopping 31 shots on the night.
Despite falling behind a goal in the first period, the Thunder rallied in the second and third to clinch an important road win in front of another large crowd at the Macquarie Ice Rink.
“It was really good sustained pressure tonight, which is traditionally something we haven’t been able to do, said Perth Thunder coach Dave Ruck.
“In the past, when we get a goal up we’ve relaxed, but tonight we kept the pressure up to finished the second period strong and carried it all the way through the third period.”
The Ice Dogs opened the scoring, thanks to a power play goal from forward Billy Cliff that saw the home team go into the first break leading 1-0.
However it was all Thunder in the second period, goals to Jordan Kyros, Daniel Goransson and a rocket from Jessyko Bernard meant the visitors led 3-1 heading into the final period. Kieren Webster put the game beyond doubt with the Thunder’s fourth goal of the night.
Despite penalty trouble in the third period, the Thunder’s penalty killing unit was able to snuff out any chance of an Ice Dogs come back, killing off of a five minute major penalty, after forward Ben Breault was penalised for checking from behind.
The Thunder are back in action on Sunday night facing the Sydney Bears at the Macquarie Ice Rink, and will be aiming to stay hot, while the Bears are still searching for their first win of the season.
For the Ice Dogs, they must regroup and prepare for their first road trip of 2017. From Sydney the team will travel to Adelaide for a double header against the Adrenaline on the 6th & 7th May. Ice Dogs captain Scott Stephenson was upbeat about hitting to the road.
“The message to boys is to come ready to work at training this week and pay attention to the details – it’s not panic stations for us, we’ll keep it loose, but work hard and take that into Adelaide.” |
