On Saturday night, the CBR Brave dismantled the Newcastle Northstars with an impressive 8-1 win to clinch a 2017 AIHL finals berth.

The game opened with a goal to Northstars forward Zane Jones, however it was all CBR Brave after the opening frame. Former Newcastle players Brian Bales, Geordie Wudrick and Jan Safar all scored for the Brave in the first period and the sides went to the first intermission with the visitors leading 3-1.
In the second period, it would only get worse for the home side, Captain and top pairing defensemen Robert Malloy took a puck to the face early in the period, which bloodied the star defenseman, sending him to the locker room so his helmet could be fitted with a cage before returning to the ice.
Wudrick struck again on the pair play and Christopher McPhail and Stephen Blunden both found the back of the net to the give the Brave an imposing 6-1 heading into the third period as they looked to secure their 2017 finals tickets in a convincing fashion.
“We knew we needed one more win to clinch the finals and that’s what we did tonight. We played our hockey and I’m proud of our guys tonight” said Canberra Coach Rob Starke
The visitors scored two more goals in the final period, inflating the score line to 8-1 by the final buzzer.
“We have a lot of offensive power and obviously we're looking to continue that, but to win championships you’ve got to be strong defensively so that something we know we need to continue to work on” said Starke
It’s been a long season for the Northstars, since their hopes back to back championships was severely hampered two months when three key players returned from a Canberra road trip injured, including star forward Zane Jones who missed two months with a lower body injury.
It’s a theme that has continued to haunt the Northstars for most of this season with Coach Petrie praising team morale and commitment after the game.
“We’re still showing up and guys are still giving 100% effort. We’re limping to the finish line and I’m just incredibly proud of the boys’ effort.” |
