The Newcastle North Stars have swept the weekend’s home and away double-header against the Sydney Ice Dogs, winning 5-2 at the Liverpool Catholic Club Ice Rink on Sunday night. After the teams played against each other the night before, they were ready right from the start and eager for another intense game. The Stars’ took advantage of their first power play half way through the first period with North Stars’ import Scott Swiston taking the opportunity to open up and steal the first goal of the game. Less than two minutes pass and the Stars’ scored again, with league leading point scorer Connor McLaughlin slotting another power play goal for a 2-0 lead. However, the Dogs didn’t waste any time and within the next minute, had evened out the scoreboard with two goals of their own through Petr Stepanek and Todd Stephenson. This definitely had the crowd on the edge of their seats with an even score board and the tensions rising. In the final moments of the first period, the Dogs conceded another two penalties which gave the North Star’s a five-on-three advantage which the Novocastrians capitalised on through Swiston’s second, giving the North Stars a 3-2 lead. The second period was fast paced and physical, yet both teams held great defence with no changes to the scoreboard. It set up a close final period but the North Star doubled the lead early through their fourth power play goal and second to McLaughlin, taking the lead to 4-2. In an interview with the Dogs’ Paul Swindlehurst after the game, he mentioned that power plays are definitely something the Dogs’ will be focusing on in training. “They scored I think it was four powerplay goals, so you take that away and it puts us straight back in the game,” Swindlehurst said. “Our power play, that needs to be a little bit better. We’re not really clicking at the minute, so this week in practice we will practice them and hopefully we will go into next weekend prepared and up for it.” Both teams continued to battle towards goal, with Swiston completing his hat-trick and slotting the North Stars fifth. Despite the 5-2 loss, the Ice Dogs put up a great fight and never gave up, putting on a great show for the home fans but the North Stars’ proved they were the better team in this weekend’s double-header convincingly. Newcastle North Stars Head Coach Andrew Petrie was extremely proud of his team and couldn’t be happier with the results. “I thought we showed a remarkable amount of discipline and stuck to our systems. We executed our game plan very, very well tonight and got away with a good win,” Petrie said. Having played the Dogs’ the night before, Coach Petrie said they were able to set up and prepare coming into the second game. “We know what worked for us yesterday and we know the areas we were challenged in yesterday, so we can make some changes and some adjustments on the play,” Petrie said. Next Saturday the North Stars take on CBR Brave at Phillip Swimming and Ice Skating Centre, while the Ice Dogs take on the Sydney Bears in the season’s final Battle of Sydney in Penrith. |
