Jamie Woodman scored the game winning goal and the Mighty Roos withstood a third period barrage to defeat host nation Serbia 3-2, in their second game of the IIHF World Championships in Belgrade overnight.
Unlike the first game, Australia held on to a lead to see out the opposition in regulation and take all three tournament points.
It was Serbia who jumped out in front first. Marco Dragutinovic grabbed the first goal of the game just 3:17 into the first period and caught Australia on the backfoot. It was 1:0 Serbia with 16 minutes to play in the first frame.
However, it would not be long until the Roos replied. An odd-man rush led by Michael McMahon ended up on the stick of Matt Armstrong, who drove into the slot and beat Arsenije Rankovic in the Serbian net to even the score 1:1.
Australia added a second just four minutes later, when Vadim Virjassov intercepted a weak clearing attempt by the Serbian defence. The Melbourne Mustang walked into the zone and beat Rankovic with a wrist shot through a screen, and Australia found themselves up 2:1 after 20 minutes of hockey. It was Virjassov’s first goal as a Mighty Roo.
Shots were 8 to 7 in favour of Serbia in the first period.
It would not take long for Australia to extend their lead to 3:1. Perth Thunder captain Jamie Woodman fired a wrist shot through a screen to grab his first of the tournament, and his power play goal had Australia up by a pair with 13:31 to play in the second.
However, the pendulum would swing back to the Serbians midway through the second.
The Roos had to kill off a five-minute penalty, after Armstrong was given a game misconduct for a check to the head in the defensive zone. The Serbians piled on 15 shots to 11 in the second and one could sense the home team were just moments from breaking through.
The same team that had surprised Croatia in their opening game continued the pressure from the second into the third period, with attack after attack on the Australian net. The pressure paid dividends just 5:57 in to the third when Marko Djumic found an even strength goal, to cut the deficit to just one.
Scenes of the Belgium game from the night before were playing through the heads of the Australian bench.
Despite the pressure not letting off from the Serbian forwards for the next 14 minutes, there was to be no sequel as Anthony Kimlin turned away everything he faced and Australia held on to defeat the host nation 3:2 in regulation.
Kimlin stopped 32 of 34 shots faced in the win, while Rankovic went 23 from 26.
Rob Haselhurst was named MVP of the game for Australia.
Australia moves into second spot in the standings with 4 points from two games and now has a rest day, before taking on undefeated Spain at 12:30am AEST on Saturday morning.
