O’Kane dashes to Fastest Skater title
Sunday, June 12, 2016 - Submitted by Alex Aloschi & Andrew McMurtry
Melbourne Mustangs Captain Pat O’Kane put on a speedy display, taking out the Air Canada Fastest Skater Competition in the first event for the AIHL All-Stars weekend at Penrith Ice Palace on Saturday night.

It was a strong start to the overall competition for Team Armstrong, winning the first three heats through defending champion Rob Haselhurst (12.62 seconds), O’Kane (12.31 seconds) and Michael Dorr (12.34 seconds).

While Team Schlamp’s Robert Malloy (12.68 seconds) and Josh Harris (12.44) clawed two points back, O’Kane finished off the competition with the only sub-12 second time in the final.

“It was good, but hard because we kind of just jumped on the ice and got right to it”, said O’Kane.

It was close competition in the final until O’Kane broke away, overtaking Kubara around the final bend.

He dominated the finish line with the fastest time of the entire event at 11.97 seconds.

O’Kane said his win “felt good” and that he was hoping that he would do well.

It was an exhilarating way to kick off the events for the evening, with Team Armstrong taking a 4-2 lead over Team Schlamp.
