Knights Defeat Adelaide |

In a nail-biter against Adelaide Adrenaline, the Canberra Knights won the first game of the Australian Ice Hockey League season in a shootout, in front of a sold out Adelaide crowd. The Knights began their season missing two of their senior players, Mark Rummukainen and Aaron Clayworth, who are still overseas having completed their duties representing Australia in the IIHF World Championship tournament. This allowed two of the team’s rookies, David Bell and Matt Cernec, to strut their stuff for the first time as Knights. The first period presented ample opportunity for goaltender Mike Brown, an import player from the USA and former Boston Bruins draft, to show his skills. He took a battering in the net, but stopped all 20 Adelaide shots in the first period. Nic Polaski, also an import player from the USA, scored the Knights first goal with only eight seconds left in the first period. On a high from their goal in the first period, the Knights set up a scoring opportunity allowing import Lucas Schott to score the second goal of the game, bringing the score to 2-0 in Canberra's favour. Adelaide, now motivated more than ever, took advantage of their power play to score their first goal of the game. With a home crowd on their side, Adelaide scored their second goal with 2.19 left in the second period. The third period saw both Adrenaline and the Knights receive two penalties and the excitement and anticipation grew with the score tied 2-2. The buzzer sounded at the end of regulation and the teams went into a shootout. With the home team advantage, Adelaide took the first shot, but Brown stood strong. The Knights first shooter was Polaski, who made it look easy scoring in the top right of the net. Looking like nothing could shake him, Brown deflected Adelaide's second shot. The Knights second shooter was Lucas Schott, a Canadian import, who took advantage of a hole left by Adelaide's goalie in the top left of the net to secure a win in the first game of the season. The final score was Adelaide 2 Canberra 3. |
