Mustangs fight off Knights |

A capacity crowd at the Icehouse have been treated to one of the games of the season with the Mustangs outshooting the Canberra Knights in a spiteful seven goal thriller. The home side prevailed 5-2 in a game with five lead changes. The game started at a frenetic pace with both sides having early opportunities to grab the advantage, yet neither were able to capitalise. It took two and a half minutes for Addison De Boer to show why he holds the all-time single season point scoring record after he slid a one-timer past between Fraser Carson’s outstretched pad and the left pipe. Speaking post-game, Carson was full of praise for the point scoring machine. “It’s daunting playing against Addison and those guys. He is a level above and that is the level you really have to work hard to get there.” Three minutes later Mustangs captain Shane Hardy tied it up after receiving a slick pass from Scott Corbett and finally beating one past the keeper. Less than a minute later the home side took control of the game with Corbett beating Nick Eckhardt. Addison De Boer brought parity to the scoreboard after receiving another pin point pass from Britt Ouellette and firing a slap-shot past the young Mustangs blocker before he had time to react. The second period began with the Knights replacing Eckhardt with the more experienced Lindner in hoping of stopping the barrage from the home side. The results were instant as the big Canadian pulled of an impressive glove save with the home side shorthanded, to ensure the one goal margin remained. The Mustangs return to full strength lead to a powerplay, which they were unable to convert into scoreboard pressure with Lindner again coming to the rescue of the visitors. Andrew Belic doubled the advantage for the home side with 12 seconds remaining in the period after finding himself on the receiving end of a slick pass from Corbett. Despite the middle period only producing one goal it wasn’t short of drama. The Knights were given a reprieve with 5.51 remaining in the second after Shane Hardy entered the ice too early, nullifying Sean Jones goal. With just 15 minutes of hockey remaining for both sides and nothing more than pride on the line the Mustangs started the strong of the two with the majority of the early minutes of the final period spent on the attack. The end-to-end hockey was quickly resumed with Mustangs cult hero Carson showing why he is one of the brightest prospects in the league. As the clock ticket to just under 10 minutes remaining Shane Hardy was able to find free ice before going top shelf to the glove side of Jason Lindner. Tempers flared with just over six minutes remaining with Hardy and Anthony Ciraulo trading blows and with it bringing one of the biggest crowds of the season back to life. Round two occurred less than two minutes later with Aaron Clayworth and Adrian Nash going at it behind the Mustangs net. Within a minute the helmets were off again as Ryan Bennett and Mark Rummukainen took to centre with both players being ejected as a result. The referees were called into action again with just under a minute left, this time to separate Chris McPhail and Jamie Bourke. Calmness returned for the last minute of the game with the Mustangs holding on to their three goal advantage to win the final encounter of their inaugural season. |
